Pharma Blister
Why are pharmaceutical products packaged in blister packs?Why are pharmaceutical products such as tablets and capsules packaged in blisters?
The main reasons are the individual protection of the product, handling for the customer, targeted product information, increased efficiency in the packaging process and general application possibilities.
A blister pack consists of the following three components:
- Moulding film (bottom film), this is moulded and is usually made of transparent PVC
- Product (tablets, capsules, etc.)
- Cover film, this is printed and is usually made of aluminium
There are two types of blister machines:
- Plate sealing machine
- Roll sealing machines
The pharma-grade blister machines have the following work stations:

Station | Activity |

Heating and moulding station | Deep drawing of the bottom film

Product feed | Tablets and capsules are inserted into the blister by means of brush-in, linear or vibration feed |
visual product control | A camera and evaluation unit are used to check for completeness, sub-mixing, breakage, etc. |
Sealing station | The blister is covered with the lidding film and sealed |
Coding station | Expiry date and batch no.: are printed on the edge of the blister |
Perforation station | Optionally, the blister can be perforated both lengthwise and crosswise |
Punching station | The blister is punched out and receives its final outer shape. |
Blister transfer | The finished blisters are transferred to a cartoner or outfeed conveyor |
Cartoner | The blisters are packed together with a leaflet in a folding box |
